The Sloan and Ford Foundations would like to fund a set of research projects to further study [the dynamics of open source code and systems that rely on it], with an eye toward better understanding the economics, maintenance and sustainability of digital infrastructure.
This directly follows on the work of Nadia Eghbal @nayafia and her report for the Ford Foundation, “Roads and Bridges: The Unseen Labor Behind Our Digital Infrastructure”.
The blockchain community is just getting started on figuring this out at well, with even more critical needs because of the global shared nature of public blockchains. But, many blockchains have coins or tokens built in as direct economic incentives, and so have the ability to deploy different tools.
I am very interested in this topic and am going to explore submitting to it. Deadline is June 13th.
